Project Guardianship's Power of Attorney Pilot Program will help older New Yorkers plan for the future while maintaining independence.
What Is a Power of Attorney?
A Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document where an individual authorizes another person or organization to handle financial matters and sign documents on their behalf.
Unlike many other legal arrangements, a POA remains active even if a person’s decision-making capacity changes. Without a POA, guardianship may become the only available option if a person can no longer manage their financial affairs.
Core Services
The POA Pilot Program will offer person-centered Power of Attorney services to older adults who do not have a trusted family member or friend to act in this role. Clients can age with confidence knowing that their basic financial affairs will be handled according to their wishes and values if they become unable to manage them independently in the future.
As POA agent, our program can:
- Pay bills and manage routine financial transactions
- Help ensure important expenses are paid on time
- Act according to your wishes and preferences
- Step in immediately, at a future date, or only if circumstances require additional support
