Senior Staff Attorney
Melissa (Mel) Alexander joined Project Guardianship in August of 2023 as a Senior Staff Attorney. Her legal career includes the areas of landlord and tenant law, real estate, family law, and intellectual property. While at law school, Mel's commitment to justice took shape through working for Main Street Legal Services’ Family Defense Clinic, where she participated in advocating for clients who were involved in family offense proceedings.
Mel's legal journey began as a Staff Attorney with Selfhelp Community Services' Community Guardian Program. This invaluable experience provided her with profound insights into the intricate dynamics of the legal system, particularly in Article 81 guardianship and landlord and tenant law. Subsequently, she refined her experience in landlord and tenant law at the New York Legal Assistance Group, continuing her mission to advocate for justice, where she defended tenants involved in non-payment proceedings, holdover proceedings, and HP actions at the height of the pandemic. Mel's journey as an attorney also continued as an associate at a private firm, where she primarily worked on real estate transactions and matters involving intellectual property and corporate law.
Mel is licensed to practice law in New York and New Jersey. She is a graduate of CUNY School of Law. She holds a Bachelors’ Degree in Literary Studies from Eugene Lang College, The New School for Liberal Arts, and a M.A.T. in Teaching English Language Arts (Adolescence) from CUNY Queens College. In her free time, Melissa enjoys reading and writing poetry, going to the theater, dancing, traveling, and has an interest in politics and philosophy. She owes her legal career to her mother.
