Who We Are

Since 2005, Project Guardianship delivers direct services and serves as legal guardians so clients can remain safe, independent, and engaged in their communities. Project Guardianship is appointed as a legal guardian under Article 81 of the New York State Mental Hygiene law to oversee a person’s personal or property matters (or both).

Project Guardianship provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team approach to helping individuals who need court-appointed legal guardians. Our clients belong to a growing population of older adults and people with disabilities who have no family or friends able to provide the support they need.

Many Project Guardianship clients live below the poverty line, and the majority are older adults, who often are living with physical, cognitive, and/or mental health disorders.

Project Guardianship employs lawyers, case managers, property manager, a benefits manager, and finance associates to assist a client to live as independently as possible, and in their own homes and communities, whenever that is appropriate for their needs.

We provide services to clients living in the five boroughs of New York City, and accept cases regardless of a person’s economic status or ability to pay for our services.

We do all of this while savings public dollars, for example, reducing Medicaid government expenditures for those under our care.

Drawing on our direct service experience, we also cast a spotlight on a desperately missing element of the social safety net by advocating for better policies and practices that impact this population. We also provide education and training on guardianship best practices and alternatives to guardianship.

Project Guardianship offices are located in downtown Brooklyn, New York.
