In early 2020, Project Guardianship was appointed as guardian for James, a young man navigating complex mental health challenges while also facing the threat of foreclosure on the home he had lived in for many years. At the time of our appointment, James was understandably wary of the guardianship process. He feared it would be a disruption to his independence rather than a source of support. Initially, he refused contact with our team.
Raised in Brooklyn, James was estranged from his family, and had been living alone until a complex overlap of issues pushed him to the brink. In addition to his mental health needs, James had been hospitalized several times due to unmanaged physical health issues, making it difficult for him to maintain stable housing or consistent medical care in the community.
Over time, Project Guardianship worked closely with James to build trust and establish a more collaborative relationship. We helped connect him with in-home mental health services that provided regular care in a setting where he felt comfortable and safe. Our team also intervened in the foreclosure process, advocating to delay displacement while helping him identify longer-term housing solutions.
Today, James is living in a supportive housing environment where he receives the services he needs to stay healthy and independent. He has enrolled in college courses to pursue his educational goals and is considering additional trainings in financial literacy and money management to further strengthen his independence.
Recently, James, with support from his attorney, filed a request with the court to terminate the guardianship—a step we were proud to support. Since the court granted the termination, Project Guardianship has remained engaged to ensure a smooth transition. We’ve worked with his care team and loved ones to review finances and help coordinate continued access to the supports that will help him succeed.
James’ story is one of resilience and growth. We are honored to have played a part in his journey toward greater self-determination and are inspired by the possibility of providing the same kind of support to others who may one day no longer need a guardian.
