Power of Attorney

Project Guardianship's Power of Attorney Pilot Program helps older New Yorkers plan for their financial future while maintaining independence. Created to help prevent unnecessary guardianship, the program provides trusted financial support for older adults who do not have a family member or friend available to manage their finances. By offering accessible, person-centered Power of Attorney services, we help clients age with confidence, knowing their financial affairs will be handled according to their wishes.

What Is a Power of Attorney?

A Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document that authorizes another person or organization to handle financial matters on your behalf.

Through this program, you can appoint Project Guardianship to:

  • Pay bills and manage routine financial transactions
  • Help ensure important expenses are paid on time
  • Act according to your wishes and preferences
  • Step in immediately, at a future date, or only if circumstances require additional support

Unlike many other legal arrangements, a POA remains effective even if your decision-making capacity changes. Without a POA, guardianship may become the only available option if a person can no longer manage their financial affairs.
